Curriculum & Learning
As an Academy, we are committed to providing the best education for all our students by providing them with a balanced curriculum which is personalised for their particular needs. We believe this gives them the best opportunity to succeed and achieve their potential, whilst within school and beyond.
Our curriculum, which includes 5 Experience Days, ensures the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of our students and their acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Through our curriculum, students develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
In all subjects, students are carefully monitored to ensure that they are effectively challenged and supported by their teachers to make progress. In most subjects this takes place within groups that are based on prior attainment but in some subjects, students are taught in mixed ability, house groups.
For those students who benefit from additional challenges, there is the opportunity to take part in a variety of enrichment activities both inside and outside of lessons. These range from taking part in national maths competitions to starting GCSE courses early in Year 9.
For those students who find the wider curriculum more of a struggle, we will build a personalised programme that includes a mix of the core and statutory subjects but also gives them time to focus on developing their self-confidence and any other specific skills they need, to be able to access their learning fully.
Key Stage 3 (Years 7 to 9)
In Key Stage 3, students follow the requirements of the National Curriculum. They study the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, and on top of this they follow a broad and balanced range of subjects:
- Design & Technology
- French and/or Spanish
Key Stage 4 (Years 10 to 11)
All students follow a core programme of GCSEs in English, Mathematics and Science.
We offer a wide range of qualifications at Key Stage 4 which provides access to a choice of academic and vocational subjects.
We aim to build a personalised curriculum for students which best meets their needs and aspirations. This ensures that they are fully motivated and challenged to achieve their potential.
In both Key Stages, Physical Education, Religious Education and Personal Development Learning are also taught in accordance with the statutory requirements. Personal Development Learning (PDL) covers specific Personal Social Health and Education (PSHE) and Citizenship requirements and is taught across 5 days each academic year where the normal timetable is suspended. These are known as Mill Chase Experience Days and are highly valued by our students.
Information, Advice and Guidance
As part of PDL lessons, students in every year are encouraged to find out about the world of education and work beyond school. The law changed in the Summer 2013, and all young people are required to participate longer in either full time education or training, so we provide relevant information on all of the possible options students have available to them after Mill Chase.
In addition, students in Years 10 and 11 have access to an individual appointment with a careers advisor to explore their own personal choices and possibilities. This allows them to make the most of their potential and ambition.
